ANIMATION TECHNIQUES

(Note: This page uses screen captures fromPowerPoint2000, hover the commands are the same for Office 2002 and 2003. Updated images are forthcoming).

Animation reveals information in a dramatic and timely manner. If used correctly, it can also help to re‑invigorate the viewers' interest in your presentation.

All one really needs to know about animation can be summed up very simply: don't overdo it! Pick a single style of animation and apply it to your entire presentation.

NEVER use RANDOM effects.

Applying Animation: Timing

Applying these effects is a 2‑step process. First you need to select the items to animate, then the type of desired animation effect is applied.

1. Open the slide with the Modules practiced earlier.

2. Select Slide Show, Custom Animation.

3. The Custom dialogue box appears with the Timings tab selected.

4 ‑ Select the item you wish to animate.

5. From Start animation, choose Animate, then choose Automatically.

6. Select each item to animate in the order you wish to have the effects.

Should you place an item in the wrong order, simply select the item you wish to re‑order then press the up and down arrow keys found to the right of the Animation order window to place it in the correct position.

Applying Animation: Effects

1.       Once completed, the special effects can be applied by clicking on the Effects tab

2.       Select Module 1 and from the Entry Animation and Sound drop down list, choose

             Peek From Left

3.       Repeat this step for Module 2 and choose the effect Fly From Bottom.

4.       For Module 3, choose the effect Peek From Right.

5.       Press Preview button to review the animation on this slide or run your slide show.

Note:

PowerPoint's default is to apply animations in the order that you place objects on the slide, and cause each action to take place by clicking the mouse. If multiple objects were animated within a single slide, then each of them would be listed in the Animation Order window.

Always make certain that the object you want to apply effects to is the same object highlighted in the Animation Order window. If, at a later date you wish to remove the animation from an object, simply put a check in the box beside Don't animate in the Start Animation area of the dialogue box. PowerPoint's default is to select Animate when opening the dialogue box because generally, that is the purpose of opening the box in the first place.

Applying Special Animation Effects

You can apply special builds in your slide presentation that are very simple to apply but can add a dramatic effect.

  1. Select the slide with the Modules that have the animation effects already applied.

  2. Go to Slide Sorter View and copy this slide three times.

  3. Once copied, go to the first slide in the series.

  4. In the first slide, delete Module 2 and Module 3.

  5. In the second slide delete only Module 3.

  6. Leave the third copied slide as is.

If you run through the slide presentation at this point, you will see how the elements arrive one by

one. The animation effects still need to be adjusted for maximum impact.

1. Go to the slide with Module 1 and Module 2.

2. Select Module 1 only.

3. Go to Custom Animation.

4. From the Effects tab, select No Effect.

5. Go to the last copied slide with the 3 Modules.

6. Apply the same No Effect to Module 1 and Module 2 only.

7. Go back to the first slide of this series and run your slide show and observe the effects.
